    Has it ever had sound?

What have you done/updated/changed since they last worked?

Are the speakers plugged in and turned on? Are they muted?

Try this: Go to Control Panel. Now click on System & Secutity. Then find Administrative Tools and click it. Now look for Component Services and double click it. On left hand side youll see "Services" click on it. Now scroll down and find Windows Audio then click on it. Now on left youll see Restart the Service, go ahead and right click on it. It will show "Do You Want To Restart These Services, click on Yes. Now sound should be back

    Which Desktop computer?

Does it actually have a soundcard, or a soundchip installed?  Have you installed the correct drivers for that soundcard/soundchip ... for that specific Operating System?

Which Operating System are you running on your Desktop computer?
