They can, but, most officers make enough money that they live off base fairly easily.  There are barracks for single officers, which are nicer, but, they pay more rent for them, and they pay extra to eat at the Officer's Mess as well (at least, they do in Canada).  Officer's quarter's are generally a bit bigger than what the Other Ranks have.  In Canada, a Private is entitled to 800 cubic feet, while Senior NCO's, and officers have bigger places.

Generally, no.  The only places that you will find bachelor officer quarters are at training bases and remote locations that are dependent restricted.

Rank has its privileges.  The higher ranking someone is, the better their quarters are.  When I was at a remote, E-5 and below had a room with a shared kitchen & bath.  E-6 and above had a living room, bedroom, and their own kitchen and bath.  When I was deployed, higher ranks had better rooms.  In Afghanistan, the field grade officers and top two senior NCOs had semi-private 4-person B-huts while everyone else was crammed in 8 person B-huts.  In Iraq, the higher ranking you were, the less people you shared a CHU with and more likely you were to have one with its own bathroom.

No is the answer, officers, including 2nd lieutenants do not live in barracks.  On larger military bases and for unmarried officers, Bachelor's Officers Quarters (BOQ) are provided.  Depending on the base, this can range from a studio apartment to a shared 2-bedroom quarters.  Married officers are provided base housing (a home).  Where BOQ's and base housing are not available, the officer receives compensation for living off base.  Aboard ship, enlisted people are (crammed) in to berthing areas while officers enjoy staterooms.  Staterooms can be shared but still have more space and privacy than berthing areas.

They can, although they are more like efficiency apartments.  Usually have full kitchen, for instance.

Most prefer to live in town though

    BOQ, Bachelor Officers Quarters .................

If they are bachelors they live in the bachelor officers quarters (BOQ)  if they live on base.  Those are pretty nice compared to barracks.    If they do not,  then they can rent something off base or even buy something off base.

nope, most bases have very few jr officer quarters, so most Lt's live in an apartment off base. Some bases do have some jr officer housing, but they are larger and much nicer than a barracks.

Most enlisted service members do not live in a barracks, usually only the non married ones during their first enlistment
