if park in gear on a hill ...does it do anymore stress/strain on transmission vs. driving up the hill?

i am having to park every day on a steep hill and i have a 5 speed transmission and the vehicle is quite old I am worried about putting it in gear on a hill for the the parking brake is maybe not working that well, if at all. but i do have a set of "chocks" that I just purchased to put under the wheel, but still I will have to leave the transmission in gear to hold it on the hill and the chocks will just be the 2nd thing that would prevent it from rolling? or maybe is there a way to put the chocks under the wheel and roll the wheels against it and still be able to not put it out of gear to remove them? or what procedure should do?
