What is the length of the rod?

A metal rod is 12.37 mm in diameter and 103 mm long before being loaded in tension. When subjected to a force of 1.3 kN, it will undergo 1.4% strain. What is the length of the rod (mm) in this loaded condition?

    By Strain (ε) = (change in length) / (original length) =  ΔL/L

    As 1.4% = 1.4/100 = 0.014

    =>0.014 = ΔL/(103mm)

    ΔL = 0.014 x 103mm = 1.44mm

    So loaded length is L + ΔL = 103mm + 1.44mm = 104.44mm
