What is the engineering stress ?

A metal rod is 4.4 mm in diameter and 135 mm long before being loaded in tension. When subjected to a force of 3.44 kN, it will undergo 3.90% strain.

What is the engineering stress (MPa) experienced by the metal rod?

    Given: d = 4.4 mm,  long =135mm

    Force= 3440N , ε = 3.90 %

    engineering stress (MPa)= Force Applied/initial Area

    σ = ρ/Ai = ρ/(π/4 x d²)

    σ = ρ/Ai = 3440/(π/4 x 10²)

    σ = 33.35 MPa
