People who calculate calories have a huge database to pull this info from these days. But when this database was being developed, they used something called a calorimeter.

What is basically done is to burn an item and see how much it takes to raise a volume of water 1 degree.

There are a few ways to consider it. Think of it as more energy out than in when converting it to another compound. Supposed you grind up a pack of Tic Tacs and ignite it, it heats up water.

I would investigate and troll yahoo answers first. A colonoscopy is a procedure to examine the inside of your colon (intestine) with a scope. A scope is a flexible tube with a small light and camera on the end. Look for the answer there.
