How good or close does a friend have to be for you to send a “are you doing ok?” Text in this pandemic time?

This is in lockdown where you cannot see friends

Is it appropriate to text this to a casual friend you see every 4-12 months? Or not

Do not want to be awkward or “overstep” a boundary.

"Are you doing OK?" doesn't necessary have anything to do with a lockdown or with corona virus. It can mean almost anything you want it to mean:  "Are you feeling well?"; "What have you been up to lately?';  Did you make up with your girlfriend?"; "Did your goldfish die?".

I would think everyone would appreciate it no matter how much you talk to them, it is showing kindness.

Ultimately, you reach out to people as makes sense to you.  There is no one golden rule here when it comes to sending a text or email, and the recipients may or may not respond.  They will do what is best for them.

Does it really matter?  I'm sure your friend would appreciate the gesture.
