Are good looks essential for an acting career in Hollywood?

Looks play a part in casting, but they're not the most important thing. Talent, training, experience, dependability, professionalism and many other things are more important then looks. And there are many successful actors who are not traditionally good-looking. There are plenty of stories of actors who were told they weren't pretty enough that went on to be very successful.

No, just look at Steve Buscemi, not handsome at all, but a damn good actor.

No, just modeling. A casting director told me once years ago that 95% of the people that had auditioned for her over the years were good looking but couldn't act.

No. Look at Barbra Streisand.

Not essential, but if you are a fine actor, good looks are a big plus. Many actors may not be Greek God gorgeous, but they have good teeth, skin and hair. They carry themselves with assurance. They are charming. They look like people we'd like to be. Anthropologists and people who study the likes and dislikes of humans have said that we are attracted to good looking people. We want to be friends with them. We prefer to marry them. We think positively about them. We want to know them, even make heroes of them. In paintings, angels are beautiful and demons are grotesque. A good confidence artist with a pleasant, good looking face can more easily win over a mark than a good con artist with a face like a demolition site. And actors need to win our confidence too. They must "suspend disbelief", as the writing manuals say, for the audience to believe the play while it is presented.

Oh, no. No, they're not. Freakishly ugly individuals get all the best roles in Hollywood, as you probably know, and everyone wants to have their babies. Hope this helped, you utter twit.

No. One's appearance simply determines most of the roles for which you might, if you're very well-trained, very experienced, intelligent and extremely lucky, get invited to audition for.

No, but if you aren't good-looking, you had better be funny, like Jack Black or Amy Schumer. Or if you're not good-looking but you are at least unique looking, you can make it as a character actor, like Steve Buscemi or Joan Cusack.
