If I downgraded to a basic phone...?

How would I find a means for navigation in the car?

Could I use a hotspot from my phone and get navigation to my iPod, get a data plan on my IPod, or could I manage with just downloading the route while I have wifi and following it?

As far as I'm aware, most modern flip phones don't have a hotspot functionality. Those extra features negate the concept of "basic", don't you think? You cannot get a data plan on your iPod because it has no way of connecting to a cell tower nor does it have a GPS. I know some flip-phones have some sort of GPS/map software, but I have no idea how good (or bad) it works.

You're probably better off buying a dedicated car GPS device like a Garmin or Magellan or similar. The advantage of these GPS devices is that you don't need a data plan as the maps are pre-loaded onto them.
