    Because some ship in Maldova was carrying ammonium nitrate and docked in Beirut to refeul or whatever. The Moldovan crew abandoned the ship after legal issues and Lebanon just stored the ammonium nitrate in a facility at the port. I've not heard what set off the explosion, as a normal fire generally wouldn't cause ammonium nitrate to explode like that. It could have been from smoke build-up in the building, but you'd think someone would have noticed way before the smoke build-up got that bad.

    Storing so much potentially explosive substances in one place is a terrible idea. And I don’t think Lebanon is too big on occupational health and safety...
