A great many things is the answer. The simple reality is the union needed to make revolutionaries bend the knee, the very type of person necessary to create America now needed to be the person who simply conforms. States rights vs federal power was an issue for almost a century and it reached a boiling point when slavery became the subject. Secession was offered by the south but the union declined. War erupted.

Native Americans; Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Catawba and Creek joined the confederacy to fight the union for their right to be a sovereign state. They desired secession from a union. Of course they never desired the union to begin with. Of course we never discuss this.

The economic impact was obviously a huge concern for the south. Rightfully so, consider this: Today we "need" migrant farm workers from other countries and illegals to pick our crops for cheap. We "need" people living well below our standard to make our products in other countries. Apperantly slavery is valuable and the South was right? We search the world for almost slaves today. I wonder what made the north consider human rights and why we don't consider them today. How far we haven't come.

    Saving Lincolns Job

because Lincoln was afraid of losing his Job he blamed slavery but forgot about the 900,000 that only got freedom on December 1866Lincoln did this is what he did to the USA to save his JobI would like to list many of the crimes committed by Lincoln and his Administration. Also Lincoln's Violations of the US Constitution. The Presidential oath of office that Lincoln swore to was "to preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution of the US. I apologize upfront for truthful, accurate, factual posts here that may hurt any Lincoln fan's feelings...The secession of states was not prohibited by the US Constitution at that time. Therefore it was completely legal for states to decide#1 Lincoln ordered the military blockade of Southern ports. This an act of war.Only Congress can do that. At that time Lincoln certainly violated the US Constitution#2 Lincoln ordered hundreds of Northern newspapers who dared to speak out against him to be shut down. And their owners and editors were arrested for disloyalty. This is a clear violation of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution that Lincoln swore to uphold.#3 Lincoln ordered the arrest of Ohio Congressman Clement Vallandigham for the crime of speaking out against him. Can you imagine that?#4 Ex parte Merryman, Chief Justice of the US Roger Taney, sitting as a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the District of Maryland, ruled that Lincoln had violated the US Constitution when he illegally suspended the Writ of Habeas Corpus. After hearing this Lincoln signed an arrest warrant to have the Chief Justice of the US arrested.#5 US Constitution Article lll...Section 3. Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them.Lincoln committed treason. Lincoln waged war upon his own country. Unless one considers secession legal and the Confederacy was a sovereign nation.#6 Lincoln sent Union troops door to door in areas of Maryland, a Union state, to confiscate weapons. This is a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution. Many Constitutional violations against Maryland'Maryland my Maryland' was published calling Lincoln a tyrant and a despot and a vandal. Lincoln as already mentioned, trashed the Constitution by suspending the Writ of Habeas Corpus and sending troops door to door confiscating weapons in areas of Maryland. Maryland was a Union state. Lincoln ordered the arrest of thousands of Marylanders for the crime of 'suspected Southern sympathies'.Lincoln ordered the arrest of US Congressman Henry May representing Maryland.#7Lincoln also had arrested...Most of the Maryland State Legislature#8Most of the Baltimore city council#9The police commissioner of Baltimore#10The mayor of Baltimore#11Thousands of prominent Maryland citizens.#12These people were arrested and held in military prisons, without trial, some of them for years. This trashing of the Constitution upset many Marylanders. One of them was named Booth. Committing so many crimes against Maryland would end up giving Lincoln a big "headache".SIC SEMPER TYRANNISApril 25 1861, When it looks as though Maryland may secede from the Union, Lincoln sends a letter to General Winfield Scott giving him permission to bombard Maryland's Cities. This war criminal Lincoln couldn't wait to bombard innocent civilians. We call that Terrorism these days.#13 Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation. This is a direct violation of the US Constitution and the US Supreme Courts decision on the matter.#14 The Lincoln administration allowed the taking of private property for public use without just compensation or due process of law. This is a clear violation of the 5th Amendment. A prime example is the Union army stealing Robert E Lees home, Arlington House, which they used as Headquarters. Since dead Union soldiers were stacking up like cordwood, they started burying them in Lee's yard. There were so many Union soldiers graves here, this was to become Arlington National Cemetery.#15 The Lincoln Administration routinely used water torture against the thousands of Union prisoners arrested and jailed without trial. This violates the 8th Amendment, "Cruel and unusual punishment".#16 Lincoln was Commander-in-Chief of an Army whose invasion of the South resulted in the deaths of 50,000 Southern civilians. AndOnly a war Monger would destroy a whole town Meriden no longer existsAfter the destruction of the economic and military infrastructure of Meridian, Sherman is reported to have said, "Meridian with its depots, store-houses, arsenal, hospitals, offices, hotels, and cantonments no longer exists all for Nothing there was No CSA army thereLincoln never cared about the slave because Congress had to Introduce the 13 Amendment to Free all the 900,000 slaves in the Union states Grant still had slaves 12 months after the war Proving it was to save Lincolns Job and nothing to do with slavery

an Honest man would never targeted Civilians 50,000 who died at the Hands of war criminals like Grant who Burnt Georgia

You in the USA have many books and websites about your civil war.  Most of the books are by historians with degrees from major universities,  who have spent years learning and teaching American  history.

    Read a few of them.

Slavery, but it’s more complex than that. It was the main reason that caused it. Southern states realized that slavery was becoming less efficient  and Northern state economic policies ruined the need for it, as they expanded into the west. The wealthy elite in the South based their power on how many slaves they owned. How do they keep that power in a changing economy, when they eventually would lose majority of seats in congress? Secede from the Union. However, the Northern states based their economy and manufactured goods mostly on trade with the Southern states. So the wealthy elite in the North were against the secession, and were the main leaders in the beginning of the civil war for the Union.

Slavery.  I'm a native South Carolinian and there was always the view that it was about tariffs or something--but if you look at the documents of when the Southern states separated, they wanted to preserve slavery.

States rights.  The Confederate States of America (CSA) claimed they had the right to secede from the United States of America and perpetuate the use of slaves to build their new nation.

The Union who were the non-seceding States said no you don't have the right to secede unless you do it as directed by the Constitution and no you can't continue to use slaves to enrich your States.  This is what they fought over.As you'll learn in world history, might makes right among nations.  So the Union won the Civil War and forced the CSA back into the United States (actually they never really left it legally) and forced the CSA to free all their slaves.

The actual cause was deciding what the Union was. The Southern view was that as the states had joined the Union of their own volition they could leave it the same way. But many issues lead to the tensions leading to the war. These included the expansion of slavery, economic issues between the Northeast, the South and the Midwest.

The north and south had been divided over slavery for many yrs. The Mo. Compromise, Kan/Neb Act, Dred Scott were all SC decisions that temporarily assuaged hostilities. There had been 63 proposed amendments and nearly all included slavery in slave states up to Lincoln's inauguration. One was on his desk but the south fired on Ft. Sumter and claimed to secede f/ the union which forced Lincoln's hand to preserve it.
