A plane left from an airport headed due west at a speed of 200 miles per hour. A second plane leaves an hour later also headed due west but at a speed of 225 m/h. After how many hours will the second plane catch up to the first plane?

As the 2nd plane leaves in pursuit, the 1st plane is already 200 mi ahead. The 2nd plane overtakes the 1st at the rate of (225-200)mph = 25 mph. Using the

relationship d = rt, ie., distance = rate*time, ie., time = distance/rate, we see that

the 2nd plane will overtake the 1st plane after 200mi/(25mi/hr) =(200/25)hr= 8hr

A plane leaves an airport traveling at an average speed of 200 miles per hour.

How long will it take a second plane traveling the same route at an average speed of 225 miles per hour to catch up with the first plane if it leaves an hour later?

Distance(d) equals Rate(r) times Time(t) or d = rt; r = d/t and t = d/r

Let t = amount of time it takes the second plane to catch the first plane

AFTER the second plane leaves.

Now we know that when the second plane leaves,

the first plane will have already traveled 200*1 or 200 miles.

We also know that when the two planes have traveled the same distance,

the second plane will have caught up with the first plane.

Total distance first plane travels = 200 + 200t

Total distance second plane travels = 225(t - 1)

And the above two distances need to be equal,

so: 200 + 200t = 225(t - 1) subtract 200t from each side

200 + 200t - 200t = 225t - 200t - 225 collect like terms

200 = 25t - 225 divide both sides by 25

t = t - 9 hrs-------so 8 hrs after the second plane leaves

it will catch the first plane

Distance plane 1 = distance plane 2

200 * (t + 1) = 225 * t

200t + 200 = 225t

200 = 25t
