Cash Cab? Is this program fixed, or somehow not real?

    All reality shows are at least partially scripted.

    It's a real game show, Bailey actually DOES drive them like a cabbie and passed the NY cabbie exam.  And they do get money, though they don't get cash on scene as portrayed.  They get checks so that it can be tracked for tax purposes.

    However, there are conflicting anecdotes of whether the cab really picks up random people.  Many report being pre-screened, though they didn't know it was Cash Cab.  They are often told a variety of cover stories about something else they're participating in, and then get a cab and ta-da, it's Cash Cab.  Some say they really were picked up at random.

    But whether the person was a random or a pre-screen, there is ALWAYS a production assistant who stops them, gets releases signed, talks over the rules and such for 10 minutes before filming resumes.
