A block of mass m is being held at rest at the top of a ramp of height, h = 3.0 m. The ramp makes a

30⁰ with the horizontal. If the coefficient of kinetic friction, 𝜇𝑘 = 0.2

a) Determine the length of the ramp

b) Determine an expression for the energy before and the energy after. I.e. state all the different

energies before and after. (Hint: work is done)

c) Solve for the final velocity of the block at the bottom of the ramp.

a

sin 30 = h/L = 3.0 / L

L = 6.0 m

b

GPE = Work + KE

m g h = (mu m g cos30)*L + 1/2 m v^2

m cancels

c

9.81(3.0) = (0.2*9.81*cos30)*6.0 + 1/2 v^2

v^2 = 6.2 m/s
