Why was Argo given a sex change after the first episode of Xena:Warrior Princess?

on the first episode, Argo shies when they approach a narrow wooden bridge, Xena says "c'mon boy, you can do it" and in every episode that featured Argo, she's identified as a mare.

It's a different horse. Pilots are shot sometimes 1 year plus in advance and different locations than the series.
