because their wings are too small and their flight muscles are too large and heavy, making it hard for them to take off

Chickens actually CAN fly! However, they are not very good at it. Their small wings allow them to fly for only a moment or two. Modern chickens are bred as food or to produce eggs, so they do not have very large wings compared to their body. This means they can't produce enough lift to overcome their weight!

They can fly. Mostly to get to the evening roost, short distances. Their body is heavy and the wings are not strong or large enough for long flights. Same with turkeys.

They can just not for long distance because they weigh more then they can carry for long distances on their wings. ALSO most FARM CHICKENS have one side of their wings clipped so they are so off balance they cannot fly but for maybe a few feet.

They can but it varies with the breed. The meat and meat/egg breeds are too heavy to fly well. The egg-breeds are better fliers, as are the show birds and the game breeds. Leghorns and legbars are pretty decent fliers. Both are bred for egg production.

They can fly, just not very high or very far. The smaller breeds tend to be better flyers than the larger breeds.
