Wi-Fi adapter speeds?

So a Wi-Fi adapter that I installed on my desktop PC is listed as an "AC1200" adapter, however down below on the box it says its maximum speeds are 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, while at 5.0 GHz it's only 867 Mbps. Neither of them are 1200 Mbps, which is what I would have assumed its maximum speed is. What does the "1200" refer to?

"1200" is marketing BS. 300 Mbps plus 867 Mbps is 1167, which is almost 1200, so they call it the 1200 model.
