Why don't the CPU manufacturers make processors bigger to increase their performance instead of smaller?

I worked in the industry many years and will try to overview the technology in a paragraph. The CPU itself is made on silicon wafers like a thin bluray disk in multiple images and laser cut out with multiple cpus on one wafer. The circuitry is spaced and circuit lines measured in number of nanometers (10 nanometers is 100,000,000 per meter or 1million per cm, or 2.5 million per inch) with many millions of transistors, diodes, or memory etched in. By making them smaller with the same amount of circuitry they lower their cost as number per wafer and they can run on lower voltage at higher speeds. There are tiny wires welded to the endpoints with the ends of the wires leading to a larger pattern board. They have multiple processors on each chip called cores. The technology is amazing and tiny. The processor is made higher performance with more cores. A smaller total sized unit fits in a smaller total package to make the final unit smaller to fit in smaller phones, laptops, and desktop pcs. The full circuit board gets other electronic components. The technology is astounding to fit so much in a small space. So, its all about number of chips per wafer to make more cpus on a wafer and faster speeds with transistors at higher density and then more cores increase the CPU size with fewer per wafer at higher unit cost and higher total performance. They also design more transistors and diodes to work other functions to make a full electronics in smaller total size. By being smaller they get more performance for the total size and today's best smartphones are higher performance than desktop tower pcs of several years ago.
Making cpus smaller with the same circuits make them faster and cheaper to make.
