    If the value inside the absolute value, x - 8, is

    either +5 or -5 then it's absolute value is 5

    ---------------------------------

    Solution I: because |-5| = 5

    x - 8 = -5

    Add 8 to both sides

    x = 3 <–––––

    Solution II: because |5| = 5

    x - 8 = 5

    Add 8 to both sides

    x = 13 <–––––

    This graph illustrates the situation

    https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=y+%3D+%7Cx+-...

    When x = 3, x - 8 = -5 and |x - 8| = 5

    When x = 13, x - 8 = 5 and |x - 8| = 5

    So, x = 3 and x = 13 are the required values

    for (x–8) positive,

    x–8 = 5

    x = –3

    for (x–8) negative,

    x–8 = –5x = +3
