    S collected (2/3) of total # of items collected.;

    S collected 3894 items.;

    Therefore 3894 = (2/3)(total # items collected).;

    ie., (total # items collected) = (3/2)(3894) = 3(1947) = 3(1950-3) = 5850-9 = 5841.

    2/3 of x = 3894

    or

    (2/3)x = 3894

    solve for x

    Let x be the total number of items collected.

    ⅔x = 3894

    Multiply both sides by 3/2.

    3/2 * ⅔x = 3/2 * 3894

    x = 3 * 1947

    x = 5841 items
