Smell is first and foremost. The presence of tiny pores (holes) where hair once was is another sign. A designer who uses a lot of recycled leather clothing in his work takes a jeweler's magnifier with him to look for pores. Real leather goods are made with lapped seams so you can see the middle layer and underaideof the leather. Fake leather has no visible raw edges so you can't see the fabric or.plastic underside. If you can see the underside real leather has a soft suede underside. Fake leather has fuzz,  fabric or plastic on the underside. Bonded leather has either a plastic backing or a suede like underside. Some bonded leather is very high quality and difficult to tell from topgrain hide. Bonded leather is sold by the yard so if your leather is sold on rolls it either bonded or fake. Real leather is sold by the hide.
