A credit card company may ask for your postal zip code or you card security code, both to help ensure that you truly have the card you are using. But neither of those truly verifies a person's identity.

How do they get my credit card info? I don't hand that out. Most want photo government ID.

Not normally. ID cards typically are limited to those that have photos on them. CC's do not.
