What trend in ionization energy do you see as you go across a period/row on the periodic table? What causes this trend?

Ionization energy increases as you go across a period because the nuclear charge increases. The additional electrons do not completely shield each other and so with increasing nuclear charge, the electrons are more strongly attracted to the nucleus.
