What can an external SSD be used for?

I recently purchased a new laptop that has an internal SSD. I then came across a review of an external SSD.

What can external SSDs be used for? Plus, why would someone wish to buy an external SSD over an external hard drive? Is it simply a question of speed?

External SSDs can be used for the storage of almost any type of file, such as games or movies. External hard drives can be quite fragile and fail frequently. As SSDs have no moving parts, they are less likely to fail if bumped while in operation or even if they are accidentally dropped.

they are good for backups, like storing movies, music, pictures, etc, but not for running programs, since they are slower and removable. plus you can take all those songs and movies and use them on other devices.
