Muffler, also called silencer, device through which the exhaust gases from an internal-combustion engine are passed to reduce the airborne noise of the engine.

if you're talking about the thing that goes on the muzzle of a firearm its not a silencer its a suppressor because it doesn't silence the sound

    On a firearm?

Gee, I wonder. I think they're a handle for when you want to beat a rogue spy with the grip.

  • a silencer muffles the sound of a ballistic projectile firearm....so that the enemy cannot detect the weapon, from ranges greater than virtually point blank.....usually used in stealth missions and operations whether in a video game or real life

Some games might give bonus damage for stealth attacks, but in games like Fallout 4 the silencer muffles the sound and decreases the damage and accuracy rating for the weapon while adding to the weapon's weight. The decrease in damage is easily offset by the bonus damage you receive if you perform a stealth attack though. Depending on the game, the use of the homemade version of the silencer can effect how quickly the weapon deteriorates, and as the weapon's condition worsens it will become less effective.

Any many games, a silencer is an accessory to a gun that muffles the sound when fired. Some games even give damage bonuses when using one/

    To silence noise.

This can be an attachment to a gun to substantially reduce or eliminate the noise made when the weapon is fired

If on a gasoline-powered vehicle, this is more commonly called a "muffler".

In both cases, the goal is to reduce the chance of someone else hearing whatever noise might be produced in order to not attract attention from others.
