When was the last time you oiled your machine?

I have been sewing since I was 12 and professionally since 1982, when I was 22 years old. I have never had any of my sewing machines smoke.

Stop using it and take it in for servicing.

Depends how old it is. On older machines the fault is often a failing capacitor - it is a matter of time before they go. Usually they are in the foot pedal, and the smoke is quite acrid. Same thing happens on old vacuum cleaners (google exploding capacitors) and the suppression they provided is no longer relevant with modern digital televisions or radios, so  can easily be removed.
