Aren't types of soils like chernozems or loess something you learned in a regional geography class?

Not necessarily. It would depend on the type of regional geography class, cultural or physical

Even in a geomorphology course all the types if soils might not come up. If there is an actual pedology (soils) course, it will probably be an upper level graduate level course or a seminar course.
