Are the Mexican people still dealing with the aftereffects of the conquest?
or is it so long ago that it's relevance has no connection to today?

They most certainly are. I've not only witnessed it, but taken part in the whole process. The guerilla group of Eagle Knights I was part of, armed with obsidian-edged swords, would ambush Spanish military parties on a regular basis and take any prisoners to be ritually sacrificed at the nearest temple complex. Yes, they are. The Indigenous people are still dealing with oppression and discrimination, for one thing; the Spanish colonizers destroyed a lot of their culture and appropriated their wealth. Sound familiar?
