Why are some people really nice to you when it’s just you two but distant when surrounded by you and other people?

Is there a reason for that?

Is the person trying to hide something from the others?

When they’re surrounded by other people, they’re distant and try to avoid this same person.

Update:

What if it’s a guy and a girl?

You would have to ask THEM to find out if there's a reason for it, not us. We don't know them, so if there's a reason for it we wouldn't have any idea what it is. It doesn't matter if it's a guy and a girl. You're looking for specific reasons for specific behavior of a certain person. We don't KNOW THEM, okay??

because everyone thinks you're a dork and they're ashamed to let other people know they're friends with you.
