Was Martin Luther's reform necessary after all these years ?
I don't see how protestants are better than Catholics in measurable way.

Martin Luther was mentally ill. He was also cruelly used/exploited by the German princes for their own political and economic purposes. The net result was a modern day, Christian, Tower of Babel.

The Reformation did not start with Martin Luther.
Recommend you read "The Bondage of the Will" by Martin Luther. Also recommend you read "The Institutes of the Christian Religion" by John Calvin.
But bottom line, yes, the ongoing Reformation was absolutely necessary due to all of the abuses that have been instituted by Rome.
And the fact that you asked the question as you did shows how much the Reformation is truly needed.

Only the Catholic Church has the fullness of truth. The Catholic Church is the only Church established personally by Jesus. She has an unbroken line of popes from Peter to Francis. The Catholic Church is the original Christian Church and there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church.

A lot more non-Catholics are alive today because of his reforms.
It used to be that if you were not a Catholic, the RCC would have you killed for heresy.

Dump catholicism and Luther. Both systems have huge problems. Catholic beliefs lead to hell because they teach works for salvation, so get completely away from those catholic beliefs. Here is the truth: The Lord Jesus Christ is God. Nobody can be good enough to avoid hell. The truth is that death leads to immediate heaven or hell, depending only on whether the person believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, or not. The truth is that the Lord Jesus Christ loves you and wants to bless your life freely :) Most of all, Jesus wants you with Him forever, and not in hell. It is too late to be saved, after death.
Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ means being forgiven all sins past and future and means going to heaven. The truth is that every belief except one will lead to eternal torment in the lake of fire for every person. Because nothing pays for our sins except the death and blood of Jesus, the sacrifice of Jesus that is already accomplished by Him . Jesus loves you! The truth is that the Lord Jesus Christ is God, and Jesus died on the cross to pay for all of our sins in full, and then Jesus was buried, and then Jesus resurrected from the dead. Nothing else pays for our sins, not works, not deeds, not religions. So the only way to heaven and to avoid hell, is by believing on Jesus for eternal life (John 6:47), without adding any of your own works (Romans 4:5). Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ to take you to heaven, and you will be in heaven, no matter what, guaranteed. That easy, thanks to Jesus! Tell Jesus that you thank Him that you will be with Him in heaven

Did you actually READ Martin Luther's words? From your question, I doubt it.

They're (((BOTH))) preaching the same gospel and are ACCURSED (Galatian 1:6-9).
Catholics believe in (((TWO))) baptisms (Ephesians 4:5). So does Protestants.
Catholics believe in eating His body (I Corinthians 10:3-4). So does Protestants.
Catholics believe in a trinity (I Corinthians 12:6; Daniel 4:35). So does Protestants.
Catholics DENY THE POWER OF GOD to "QUICKEN" their "DEAD spirits" back to life! So does Protestants.
(((NO ONE))) is preaching the gospel of Christ THE POWER OF GOD" (Romans 1:16)
"QUICKENING" (I Corinthians 15:45) their "DEAD spirits" (Romans 5:12-14) back to life (Ephesians 2:1).
That's what Christianity is all about being "born again of the spirit" (John 3:5-7)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BY HIS POWER<<<<<<<<<<< (Romans 1:16)!

Not better. Just different. Protestants simply didn't want to be Catholic after reading the bible for themselves. They wanted to be something else. That's basically how it's turned out to be.
Was in necessary? For those particular people, it seems as though it was - considering that many of them paid for their preferences with their lives.
