I've graphed the range on a number line and then placed the 4 possible choices. Which one do you think is within the range (blue line) and closest to -4?

The first two are our of range: -18 to -4 .

The third is closer to -18 than to -2 .

However, -6 is closer to -4

The integers that are less than −4 but greater than −18 are:-

-5, -6 – 7, - 8, -9, -10, -11, -12, -13, -14, -15, -16, -17

those that are nearer to – 4 are:- -5, -6 – 7, - 8, -9, -10,

The only match amongst the values

−2, −19, -17, −6 is -6

halfway between -18 and -4 is ½( -18 - 4 ) = -11

-11 < x < -4

….. number that fit this domain...

so considering the given options -6 is the solution

-2 is greater than -4, so we can throw that out.

-19 is less than -19, so we can throw that out.

-17 is in the range but is closer to -18.

-6 is in the range and is closer to -4, so that's the answer.
