Is it more appropriate or inappropriate for someone locked out of the house to bang on doors when their neighbors are sleeping at night?

If you were to stop and think about it for a moment, I'm sure that you would come to the obvious conclusion that it would depend on the circumstances involved. If you were locked out of the house where you happened to live with your 87 year old grandmother who's hard of hearing, then it might be understandable, but if it's the middle of the night and you're attempting to alert people in the house to your presence who also happen to be sleeping, it's unlikely that you'd need to cause such a racket.

It is appropriate. But this should happen less than once a year. And you should bang for less than 10 seconds then wait 3 minutes before banging again.

i would just try not to bang so loud

Obviously the only door they should bang on should be the door to their own house. Or they could have thrown small pebbles at the window of the bedroom where they knew a member of the family was.
But surely anyone of an age to be locked out at night would carry a mobile phone? Why didn't you just call whoever was at home to come and open the door for you?

It's a matter of priorities. Yes, it's rude to make unnecessary noise that might wake up the neighbors. However, being locked out of your house can have many bad consequences--some unimportant and some important. The person knocking is justified in doing it if not getting inside would have important consequences.
If it were you locked out, what would you have done?
