Why is job performance seemingly secondary to qualifications when employers evaluate and decide compensation for employees?
My coworker received a raise 6 months after graduating from college once he finally informed our employer.
If they couldn’t tell he graduated based on his job performance, why does he deserve a raise if our position doesn’t require a degree?

His knowledge didn't appear after he received his degree.
It's possible that he had not been sufficiently compensated for his increased performance over the last few years. Or maybe the increase is not related to performance but to dedication by getting the degree (or continuous development).
