What's the difference between "when will you come back" and "when are you going to come back" ?

Context: I say this to a foreign friend as she leaves for her home country

    "When will you be coming back?"  That s the form which feels natural to  me in Britain.

    "When will you..." is just the future. It's more transactional, no emotion behind it.  "When will you be -ing?" has more intention behind it (for the person who'll be coming back).

    They mean the same thing.
