what does reverential mean?

with reverence. reverence refers to respectful and somber, also sometimes a form of quiet adoration of superiority, perhaps. We are not reverential at a funeral because we consider the deceased as superior to us in some way, but simply out of respect for both the deceased and the living who were close to him (it is not a celebration, it is a way to show respect for the departed individual and his remaining loved ones for their loss). Reverential is also used when discussing gods, "superior" beings. Perhaps even rock stars and famous movie actors, for some people. Objects of worship.
