    The price of a gallon of unleaded gas was $2.88 yesterday.

    Today, the price fell to $2.81.

    Here's how I'd answer it:

    2.88*x = 2.81 --> x = 0.9756944444444444

    So there was a 1 - 0.976 = 0.024 = 2.4% decrease.

    % = ($ original - $ new) / $ original * 100

    % = (2.88 - 2.81) / 2.88 * 100

    % = 2.4305555556

    Percentage decrease = 2.4% <–––––– Rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent.

    There’s a 7 cent discount so the original amount multiplied by the percent equals 7 cents.

    X(2.88) = .07

    X = .07/2.88 = .024 = 2.4%

    It says to round to the nearest tenth of a percent so 2.4%.
