What is it like to work as a sales rep in a car dealership? Is it worth it?

I've worked in retail/sales and banking but not car industry. I'm excited and nervous. I am a mom of 4 children that I have to provide for so failing is not an option. My choice is between going back to banking which I find to be very boring (but the pay is great) or this new adventure.  I'm not sure what the pay is like for the dealership.

    Car salespersons are paid a commission based on the the number of sales and amount of profit in each deal.  New Car Dealers usually offer a "DRAW" against your commission when you first start.  New salespersons usually have to work Weekends and Evenings and that is when most sales occur.  Long hours, many boring.   Good Luck

    Where I live it is a basic salary with short hours and your salary is made up from the commission of the cars you sell but where I live there is very few people per week able to buy a car and if you don't reach your target you are out of a job after a month or so, Good Luck

    In the stores where I worked (13 years, for single and multiple badges).

    The most common system was a New Hire did all the lot jobs, and the sales chances were in rotation.

    The Sales Manager would lead the sales staff in which vehicles to push (used) or guide (new). What tricks to use, what questions to avoid, what to not bring up. How to transfer the sale to the Financial Officer to Close.

    Some Stores are Scammers, Others just want to make lots of sales with happy return customers.

    There is only 3% to 12% profit in New Cars, Used vary 1% to 60%.  All sales are on commission.

    It takes a pusher to make it in Auto Sales.  It is clean work but very stressful.

    Have you considered the Trades: Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry?

    Car sales is not for most.   They hire way more salesmen than they need knowing most will flop.  You're hired to sell cars. For the first few months they assume you can sell to friends & family. Then what?  Then you are let go because you can't earn your keep.  Oh and 60+ hour weeks are common.

    i would just try to get a job there and see and then you'll know
