The "artificial sweeteners are bad" opinion is a wrong opinion. Modern artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (and the natural Stevia) have no proven ill effects, except diarrhea if consumed in gigantic quantities.

A person with diabetes, can eat anything, sweet or otherwise. Now depending on what their blood sugar is before they eat, should determine how much of any carbohydrates you can eat. It will also depend on how much exercise that particular diabetic is getting, the type of diabetes medication or insulin they are using, and of course how proactive the person is about their general health, diet, and THEIR diabetes.

Yes. I have in the past. As long as you take enough insulin or oral medication, but not too much, a diabetic should be fine. I cringe every time someone says diabetics should not eat bread, pasta, pastry, rice, potatoes, corn or fruits. If diabetics don't eat any carbohydrates they will starve to death.

It is not just about "sugar" and "sweet" things.

ALL carbohydrates become sugar in the body - so a diabetic needs to consider how many carbohydrates they should have per meal and per day and then eat food according to staying within their daily goals.  Their doctor should recommend a consultation with a dietitian that can help them set their daily goals.  Daily goals would be different for each diabetic based on their health and their daily activity levels.

A waffle with syrup can easily have a total carbohydrate count that would be over the limit for one meal.  There are ways to make the waffles and syrup "better" by picking whole grain choices for the waffle and reduced sugar choices for the syrup.

A diabetic can eat anything they want to.  They just need to try to stay within their daily goals and not have too many added sugars - especially not on the same day.

A diabetic can eat whatever they want to. However, they should be prudent and make allowances by eating less sugars and carbohydrates that day.
