How did the study of seismic data from earthquakes lead to the discovery of Earth's core?

S waves, also called shear waves and secondary waves, are not transmitted by liquids. The Earth's outer core is liquid. If one or 2 of at lest 3 or more seismometers never receive a waves, that means there is liquid somewhere. There often is liquid in the crust and mantle as well. That's what ground water in the crust is.
