Does mild dementia cause a person to not hear something someone said (as in being mentally not there, NOT losing their hearing)?

Depends what you mean by mild dementia. In my experience they can become unable to remember what someone just said seconds ago in late stage. The patient may be sullen as a result of depression or just sheer worry; sometimes having a UTI will make them like that. Talk to their doctor before working on assumptions.
