Please help! What does 'cloud' meaning in this context?

"The reception would be held in that house and the festivities would go on all day. There was no doubt it would be a momentous occasion. The war with the Japanese had just ended so there would not be any nagging fear for their sons fighting in the Army to cloud these festivities. A wedding was just what people needed to show joy."

What is meant by 'cloud' there?

In that context 'cloud' means 'to dampen the spirit of celebration (by thoughts of the sons in the armed forces perhaps getting injured or killed)'.

The notion is of a lovely sunny day, which suddenly becomes chilly because a cloud passes in front of the Sun.

to trouble, in a metaphorical sense of "cloud".  not a literal cloud, but a metaphorical dimming of sunlight (meaning happiness).  Don't darken my doorstep with your bad news, do not cloud my day with your complaints.  Not intended literally, but only figuratively.

Something that might disrupt or spoil the occasion.

Just like when a cloud covers the sun, the day would not be "darkened" or ruined by having the sons off at war.
