How come the mentally ill get sent to prison instead of a mental hospital ?

It seems prison would not help them and make them worse

Prison isn't about helping the inmates; it's about maintaining the privilege of the ruling class. We're told that we live in the land of freedom and opportunity, but the USA has imprisoned more people, per capita, than any other "civilized" nation. Slavery wasn't abolished; it just got a new public image.

people who are found not guilty due to being mentally unstable are sent to mental hospital where they stay until they are seen as being mentally fit enough to stand trial for the crimes they have committed

Not enough money in mental health yet for that to happen

If a person who is mentally ill commits no crime he is never sent to prison. However, should he/she commit a crime the sentence is up to the judicial system. Many jurisdictions have few mental facilities available and no funding to provide for one and have no choice other than having a mental violent felon sent to a community housing arrangement which is not safeguarding the public.

They don't ALL get sent to prison. They get sent there when their crimes result in conviction. And you're correct: prison does indeed make some mental illnesses much worse--and sometimes it also enables the mentally ill to get needed treatment. That is a rarer outcome, but it does happen.

It's definitely a problem in our society. The entire prison system as well as the treatment and identification systems for mentally ill is badly in need of reforms. That's a long ways away, though. Until our society decides to do something about it, don't expect changes.

Psychiatric hospitals are basically prisons as well.  Take it from somebody who knows. And they don’t help Mentally ill people either. Take it from somebody who knows. They can subject you to shock treatment and force psychiatric drug injections into your veins against your will in a psychiatric hospital. They can’t even do that in a prison setting. And if you tell them you want to leave and they don’t think you’re ready to leave, you’re not going to leave. You might even have better luck at a prison parole hearing.

A number of years ago the US closed a lot of mental health care facilities. Treatment of mental health in the US is mediocre at best.  There are different types of prisons however. People can be incarcerated with mental health issues in either criminal institutions or ones that are strictly for the mentally ill.  It depends on the judge, the case, the lawyers involved.  Its not black and white
