What is the point of foreign actors play American?

Of course that cuts both ways. Americans who play foreigners. Obviously directors and producers want the best actor for the part. Or the best one they can afford.

Sometimes actors pretend to be people they are not. A lot of the people who have played Hamlet were not Danish. AFAIK Othello has never ever been portrayed by an actual Moop.Source(s): Sometimes actors pretend to be people they are not.

A foreign actor would want to play an American for several different reasons including that the character may be fun/challenging to play; they get to work with a director or other members of the cast/crew that they admire; and they feel it will help advance their career, and to make money.
American productions may cast foreign actors because they feel the actor best fits the needs of the production. The actors helps fulfill the vision of the director or producer, the actor has a reputation of being reliable and professional, the actor has a large following who would be eager to pay to see their work, the actor has good chemistry with their co-workers and many other reasons.

There is no "point".
When a role is being cast, the casting director approaches their favourite agencies. The agencies pick any of their clients who might fit the role (age, height, weight, gender, accent, skin colour, etc) and invite them to apply. Any of those actors can apply, a few will be auditioned, and the casting director will choose the best actor for the job. Their nationality is usually irrelevant.

There is no particular point to it. Actors seek out roles and usually take what they can get.
