Mass of salicylic acid = 2.86 tons
1 ton = 907185 g
so mass of acid in g = 2.86 x 907185 = 2.5945 x 10^6 g
Mol salicylic acid = mass / molar mass
= 2.5945 x 106 g / 138.12 g/mol = 18784.7 mol
volume acetic anhydride = 127 gal = 4.8075x 10^5 mL
density acetic anhydride = 1.08 g/cm3
mass of acetic anhydride = density x volume
= 1.08 g/cm3 x 4.8075 x 10^5 mL
= 5.1921 x 10^5 g
mol acetic anhydride = 5.1921 x 10^5 g / 102.09 g/mol = 5085.8 mol
acetic anhydride is present in lesser amounts , so it is the limiting reactant
Number of mol of acetyl salicylic acid formed will be = 5085.8 mol
Theoretical yield = mol x molar mass
