Gandhi achieved nothing.  Britain was committed to leaving India from before the First World War, and by the 1930's applicants for civil service jobs in India were warned it was a temporary post.  The nationalist politicians both Hindu and Moslem would have nothing to do with Gandhi, who was cultivated and promoted by the British because they thought he was easily manipulated.  There are temples today in India built to honor the man who shot him.

He tried his hunger strikes repeatedly. He was forever on the newsreels of the time. They had some effect, but do people really need to be told that murdering others is wrong? All bets are off when it comes applying logic where religion is concerned.
