Because the Electoral College uses your vote to decide how to cast theirs.

    Your vote chooses the electors.

    USA is a representative republic.

Your vote is supposed to pick the electors, in theory.

Suspecting maybe there are other reasons you shouldn't vote.

There is no point in standing in line for hours in the cold catching Corona and needing to use the bathroom just to try to give Biden a popularity contest like Al Gore and Hillary Clinton. The Editorial votes are the only ones that count and there's nothing in the Constitution that says they have to be based on the popular vote. The Editors are already selected and have made up their minds already one week before the Election so it's not like you could change the outcome. Chillax.

The Electoral College is the only fair way to vote.  This way each state gets a voice in the election and not just the big states.

When you vote in the general election, you are actually voting for a slate of electors.  If your preferred candidate wins your state (or your congressional district if you are in Nebraska or Maine), the nominees for elector pledged to that candidate becomes your state's electors.

So while it is a two-step process, your vote effectively chooses the president.
