    Probably a safe word to use because the Scots and Welsh get upset if you call them English.

    This Brit wouldn't mind. It is just an abbreviation. There are worse things to be called. Some Brits might object if they reject the idea of Britishness and would rather be called 'Scottish' or 'Welsh'. You can't please everyone and 'Brit' is a reasonable word to use. Whether people are reasonable in return is beyond your or my control.
