Can we still apply these words to this modern world?

Very biblical, isn't it? You quote the words from Ephesians 2:5. All Christians can apply those words to themselves, IF they have been saved by the grace of God, through faith in Christ. And when you have, you know it's true! And you know millions of others have experienced the truth of those words for nearly 2,000 years now. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, in a believer's ears!
