    To have none, nothing.

To have fewer than it did, what most other countries did: mandate masks, shutdown more, contact trace better.

    1.  The second it was identified in China we could have shut down all international air traffic coming from overseas until we had a handle on what was going on.   2.   We could have shut down travel within the USA from cities where it was found.  3.  We could have mandated masks and social distancing sooner and in a more consistent manner.   4.  We could have tested better.   ........... Face it,  we needed a leader,  not a TV show host.

The original mistake was giving China "most favored nation status" in our trade dealings.  That was in 2000, and was the work of Bill Clinton.  Before then, starting with Nixon, the idea was to trade with China to keep them peaceful, but Bill let them loose, and they are about to take over with the high tech shenanigans they pull.  You can still see that arrangement in the current democrat party with Biden.  The American high tech companies are an integral part of Chinese high tech, and have a code of conduct set by the communist Chinese.

It isn't realistic to have no deaths from a plague like this one. The Law of averages says so.

Have a president who doesn’t spout conspiracy theories or downplay the virus. Trump convinced millions of his followers to be superspreaders.
