    α₁ = temperature coefficient of expansion for brass

    α₂ = temperature coefficient of expansion for aluminium

    Increase in length of brass is α₁*2.0*(T – 21.3)

    Increase in length of aluminium α₂*1.0*(T – 21.3)

    These have got to add-up to the initial gap size:

    α₁*2.0*(T – 21.3) + α₂*1.0*(T – 21.3) = 1.72*10^-3

    (T – 21.3)(2α₁ +  α₂) = 1.72*10^-3

    T = 21.3 + (1.72*10^-3/(2α₁ +  α₂))

    I don’t know what values you have for α₁ and α₂, but just put them in the above equation.
